Heather Gaudio Fine Art, a contemporary art gallery in New Canaan, Connecticut, announces the upcoming exhibition, Waterways II. Opening on Thursday, May 30, the show features select works by nine artists including Shawna Ankenbrandt, Sophia Collier, Michael Dweck, Bonnie Edelman, Roxanne Faber Savage, Karen Gunderson, Cornelia Kubler Kavanagh, Katherine Parker and Eric Zener.
Heather Gaudio invites the community to the opening reception to be held from 5pm to 7pm on Thursday, May 30. "We are pleased to present such a diverse collection that highlights talented artists from both coasts.” states Gaudio. “Waterways II offers an opportunity to view a curated group of works marked by exceptional quality united by a central theme,” she continued. The exhibition will run through August 24.
Finding inspiration in the vastness of the ocean and man’s interaction with it, Shawna Ankenbrandt’s photography captures this relationship. Growing up in a landlocked state, Ankenbrandt looks anew at the ocean and her fresh take is revealed in her photography through its dramatic composition. Her work is held in the corporate collections of Fred Segal, Santa Monica, CA; Juicy Couture, East Hampton, NY; Stanley Law, Los Angeles, CA and in the private collections of Jamie Lee Curtis and Steve Mnuchin.
Sophia Collier describes her artistic practice as a form of basic inquiry. Using the tools of science, technology and deep contemplation as microscopes and stop action cameras to examine reality, she creates carved acrylic water surfaces. The inspiration for these works is the idea of reaching into the water and picking up a piece of the surface to keep forever. Collier developed software that enables her to simulate the movement of wind across water and also mix in information from other rhythmic sources such as pulse, breath or dance music. She has exhibited in SCOPE Miami 2012 and SCOPE New York 2013.
Michael Dweck is a visual artist known for his seductive photographic style and pursuit of alluring subject matter, principally the female form and locales that offer their own particular enchantments. Dweck’s images, while often abstracting the female body in a painterly swirl of watery refractions, celebrate the physical charm of the feminine form and the meditative isolation of the underwater world. His work has become part of important international art collections and has been exhibited extensively throughout the world including solo exhibitions in New York, Belgium, Hamburg and Tokyo and at the Fototeca de Cuba Museum in Havana.
Bonnie Edelman has traveled the world over working with renowned photographers such as Sante D’Orazio, Russell James and Francesco Scavullo during her distinguished career in publishing. She has brought her finely tuned editorial eye to her career as a fine art photographer and to her book,Sermo Per Equus, described as “truly sublime” by Architectural Digest. Her body of work entitled SCAPES (Land, Sea, Sky), captures the colors of nature and allows the artist to see the world in blurs of color rather than in detail. Her modern abstract photographs have garnered the attention of renowned designers Nate Berkus, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Kathryn Ireland, Evan Lobel, Jonathan Rosen and Kate Kelly Smith, SVP Publishing Director at Hearst. The Murphy and Dine Gallery and Spazio 522 Gallery, both in Chelsea, NYC, in addition to LOT 84 of Mt. Kisco, NY, all featured solo shows of the artist’s work. Bonnie's pieces are held in the private collections of Rob Thomas and select public collections that include Ralph Lauren- Hong Kong, London, Budapest, Berlin, Copenhagen, Amsterdam; The whole of Bellevue Hospital's Hospice Wing, The VNS Corridor, New York, NY; Field Point Private Bank and Trust, New York, and the NFL.
A visual artist and printmaker, Roxanne Faber Savage’s work is comprised of traditional etchings, silk aquatint and monoprints. Freedom, energy, and the unconscious line are central to her mark making and visual story telling. Working with crayons, paint, mixed materials and printmaking, she layers and exposes, revealing a passion for handling tactile materials. In her series of “sea paintings,” Karen Gunderson transforms blackness into an illuminating experience. The paintings are large, edge-to-edge views of nocturnal seas. Through the use of an ever-so-delicate range of tonality in her hues, she poetically portrays the surface of water as it is seen in its infinitely variable moods. Her work has been exhibited in the United States, and internationally, for more than 40 years. Approaching sculpture with an intellectual and emotional manner, Cornelia Kubler Kavanagh creates series of sculptures that comment on a particular theme, whether it is a natural or cerebral subject. Kavanagh has been widely recognized as an esteemed sculptor with her inclusion in the Miami Art Basel Design District and the Venice Biennale. Her work is also featured in public collections including Art Place, Yale University, New Haven, CT; Long Wharf Theatre, New Haven, CT; Yale-New Haven Hospital, New Haven, CT; Sunbelt Beverage Corporation, New York, NY and University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro, NJ.
Drawing inspiration from her academic background as an M.F.A. graduate from Columbia University, Katherine Parker speaks about pessimism and optimism in her paintings which characteristically center on abstraction and landscapes. Parker creates her work by painting, scraping, and carving her canvas using oil paint. Her work has been exhibited in numerous art institutions and galleries and is held in private and public collections including Samsonite Corporation, Boston, MA; New York University School of Law, New York, NY and Zimmerli Art Museum in New Brunswick, NJ.
Eric Zener has a fascination with water and the transformative quality of immersion. Ephemeral or not, he explains that we are inextricably connected to its power. From our conception, culture, religious sacraments, cleansing, joy and our mesmerizing gaze at the horizon, we are connected to it. For Zener, water provides both an escape and a return. A surrendering. His work has been exhibited in the United States, and internationally, for over 20 years.
