When journalist and former Fairfield County resident Kim Kavin decided she wanted a puppy, she did what many people do: clicked on an online photo and submitted an application. She had no idea the cute pup with the brindle coat was actually a last-minute rescue from a gas-chamber shelter in North Carolina. That puppy, Blue, arrived in the Northeast in an RV driven by members of a growing grass-roots network trying to save these animals. Blue was happy, but seemed to have endured something unusual, leading Kavin to trace his history back to the shelter. Little Boy Blue is the story of that puppy’s journey of survival, as well as a shocking exposé of the brutal reality that exists inside some shelters.

Kavin is an award-winning writer who knows how to tell a story, but she’s also a seasoned reporter who breaks big news here: namely, that U.S. taxpayers are spending nearly $15 million a year to support shelters that kill dogs in gas chambers. One of her sources for the book is Claudia Weber of the Town Clerk’s office in New Canaan.
