Editor Note: In the Moment
Ah, September and October! That means school and the social season—which, in turn, means every weekday will be fraught with mad dashes to get the kids on the bus with homework done and cleats for after-school athletics packed in bags. Each weekend will be filled with luncheons, family dinners, and lush soirées and benefits. There’s a reason we call it the silly season—we’re all rushing around so much, we just look silly.
But I’m not sure I mind. In fact, I enjoy the first snap of an autumn breeze to get me up to speed with all the activity. These busy times, building our kids’ future and enriching our own lives by spending time with our friends and neighbors, create great “moments.” That is, they do if we’re aware enough to take a mental snapshot now and then.
Spending time with friends is one of the easiest ways to perk me up. Perhaps because I know it’s about the company and not the fuss. I subscribe to the idea that one shouldn’t overthink a party at home or an informal get-together before a football game at the high school. It’s different for galas and holidays, I admit; in those cases, the pro caterers and a few of the towns’ savviest hostesses offer excellent tips (“Entertaining Season,” page 70). At least I can look the part of a sophisticated hostess. The point, no matter the affair, is to have fun and make stories.
You have shared many stories and moments with me, some of which I put in this issue. I was reminded of two big anniversaries in Rowayton—lovely Bell Island and the Rowayton Arts Center. From friends at the Philip Johnson Glass House, I learned about a fascinating New Canaan man who is a world-renowned master of modern design, Jens Risom. He’s ninety-four and still actively designing and enjoying a resurgence in his work. And, of course, our cover story introduces ten teens to watch from area schools. Prepare to be impressed and inspired.
Since you’ll be out and about so much, we turned to a legendary fashion designer for a peek at fall fashion. The one and only Michael Kors! (Note: I don’t use exclamation points unless I’m jumping up and down...which...I...am...doing.)
Our “Fab Finds” offers ideas for stylish clutter control, and “Don’t Miss This” lists town happenings that so many of your neighbors are working on—to add joy to childhood, to raise money for a good cause, or to simply celebrate life together.
Enjoy every moment!
