More than $630,000 will be available for the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk to present its environmental education programming to students in the tristate area, thanks to a great turnout for the aquarium’s sixteenth annual Cirque de la Mer fundraiser. Proceeds from the evening support the aquarium’s renowned Red Apple Fund for Student Enrichment.

The event drew 350 guests who enjoyed cocktails in the aquarium galleries, an elegant sit-down dinner and silent and live auctions. Per and Astrid Heidenreich of Greenwich were honored at the event for their commitment to environmental education. The Per and Astrid Heidenreich Family Foundation has led the charge for the funding, design and construction of a new green research vessel for the aquarium. This new boat, a 65-foot electric/diesel hybrid catamaran that’s scheduled to launch in spring 2014, will replace the current 33-year-old diesel-powered trawler.
