Creative Spirit

The Silvermine Arts Center hosted more than 400 people at its second annual ArtsFest, a fun-filled outdoor event that featured the music of Howard Fishman and the Biting fish Brass Band and the puppetry of WonderSpark Puppets. In addition to entertainment, there were hands-on activities and demonstrations led by the Silvermine School of Art faculty.

Howard Fishman and the Biting Fish, a five-piece New Orleans-style brass band, led adults and children around the Sculpture Walk, pointing out the new pieces recently added to the walk. These high-energy musicians performed originals as well as a classic brass band repertoire of spirituals, blues, gospel and funk. Kids of all ages enjoyed the show by WonderSpark Puppets, who performed Kid Lancelot’s Birthday Quest, a medieval adventure with a cast of hilarious characters.

The creative side of the community certainly came out at this event as attendees participated in, and become a part of, the creative process through experiments with pottery, plein air painting, portrait drawing, printmaking, watercolors, and fusion felting. Everyone, from toddlers to adults, got into creating one-of-a-kind monsters from natural and recycled materials at the open air installation area. The event was such a big success, Silvermine Arts Center has every intention of bringing it back again next year. www.silvermineart.org
