From the Editor: Aw, Shucks

A lot of ink has been spilled over the years in homage to the oyster. The essayist Michel de Montaigne compared it to a violet. The French poet Léon-Paul Fargue said eating one was “like kissing the sea on the lips.” James Beard described it as “one of the supreme delights that nature has bestowed on man.” But the oyster has naysayers, too, including American food writer M. F. K. Fisher, who pointed out that it’s “more like the smell of rock pools at low tide than any other food in the world.” You’ll never get everyone to agree on the oyster, but it does seem there’s a consensus on where to find the freshest and tastiest in Fairfield County.

That place is The Restaurant at Rowayton Seafood, which created the artful platter on the cover of this issue. Most of you are familiar with this waterfront eatery, and many of you rank it high on your list of favorite dining spots. How do I know? Because The Restaurant at Rowayton Seafood took honors as the top seafood restaurant in the county in our annual Best of the Gold Coast readers’ poll. This isn’t the first win for the restaurant. It’s been voted a top spot more than a few times, and for good reason.

Owner Kevin Conroy founded one of the most delightful social spots in our area. Its success is based not only on the fresh food, dependable menu and fine-dining experience, but also on a very special location. Because it sits on the edge of the scenic Five Mile River, there are fantastic water views and guests can enjoy them from the big windows in a dining room that faces west, which for many (myself included) makes this spot one of the best places from which to enjoy a golden summer sunset.

You’ll discover many other locations to experience in this issue. That’s the mission of our Best of the Gold Coast section. Here, we profile all of the shops and services that are ranked tried-and-true by the people who read this magazine. The results of this year’s contest are the most informative and entertaining yet, in large part because we had more participation than ever before. More than 13,000 people voted in the on-line poll and they’ve made their preferences clear in 190 categories. Our discerning readers and residents have selected the finest in food, fashion, fitness, fun and more. Check out all of the winners and let us know if your favorites are here. Ultimately, we hope this is just the kind of information you need as you go about the enjoyable work of planning out the long and lazy days of summer.
