Bring it Home

I grew up in Rowayton, so salt water is part of my DNA. A good day ends with me finding sand in my pockets and at some point included tripping in flip-flops, biting into a warm roasted marshmallow, and, of course, watching fireworks. Give me the beach. Weathered T-shirts. Ice pops.

Of course, when you live in Rowayton, you spend a lot of time in Darien and New Canaan—“the village” isn’t a village in name only; it’s actually quite small and one needs to roam and forage for Hunter boots and tandoori food elsewhere.

Given this personal history, you can see why I couldn’t wait to find out what you, our readers, think defines our towns. Everything from your favorite restaurant for lobster to your go-to boutique for designer jeans is all listed here, and much more. The shops and restaurants help define our community. That, in and of itself, says a lot; inside you will find the ones you readers voted as going above and beyond.

Since this is our sixth time running a Best Of issue, you might think we, the staff, were very well prepared to accept your choices without any fuss. We thought so too, but the way we scoured the list to see if our personal favorites made top spots revealed that we might be guilty of harboring mild criticisms. To be perfectly frank, we couldn’t repress our approvals and disappointments. Both reactions are part of what make this feature so much fun for us and you. Ultimately, we fully support the results.

One more thought about that “village” comment. We know some of us are perfectly happy hearing about a great shop in Greenwich or a deli in Westport, but, certainly, it’s more meaningful to hear about a place even closer to home: in New Canaan, Darien, or Rowayton. With that in mind, this year we added a special section: the “best” restaurants, shops, and services in our towns—no driving on I-95 necessary.

Don’t miss our celebration on July 22. Details are posted on our website at mofflymedia.com. If we haven’t met yet, I’ll be the one knocking sand out of my stiletto.

Happy summer!
