The New Canaan Preservation Alliance (NCPA) has awarded Silver Hill Hospital a 2104 Historic Preservation Awards Citation for Preservation and Rehabilitation of River House, a 1913 English Tudor style home that has served as a residence for patients since the 1980’s. This is the second preservation award given by the Alliance to the hospital, the first being for the 2012 renovation of Scavetta House, a historic home on the 42-acre campus that is also a patient residence.

“As a hospital accredited by the Joint commission, we must meet all of their strict safety and quality requirements in every renovation,” says Dr. Sigurd Ackerman, President and Medical Director of the hospital, “But our board is equally as committed to preserving the architectural integrity of each and every building on our campus.

The New Canaan Preservation Alliance is a nonprofit with the mission of advocating “for the preservation of the town’s character-defining historic architectural and natural environments.” River House, located at 143 Valley Road, was originally designed by Austin W. Lord of Lord and Hewlett Architects in New York City. Scavetta House was designed several years later by Alfred Mausolff, a student of Lord. The architect for both renovations, was Richard Turlington from New Haven, CT. Pac Group, LLC of Harwinton, CT, led the construction for the River and Scavetta House renovations.

The award was given during the NCPA annual Awards Ceremony on May 4, 2014 at the Country Club of New Canaan. Accepting for the hospital was Elizabeth Moore, Chief Operating Officer. “Being a good neighbor and responsible partner is of paramount importance to us,” Ms. Moore goes on to say. “I thank NCPA for once again recognizing our hard work and dedication to the town of New Canaan.”
